Silk Fabric


Silk is one of the widely used fabric in textile industry and even it is considered as most luxurious fabric. Silk is not only a synthetic fiber but also an animal fiber as it is extracted from silkworm. It was first produced in China and then its production extended to many other parts of the world. Due to the beautiful and eye catching luster & appearance it can be identified easily. Although, it look very delicate but is the toughest fabric available in market till now date. Silk fabric is processed and woven in several ways and most importantly processing decide the use, price, quality and appearance of silk. Being a strongest and natural fabric it can be processed as well as used with any other fabric.
Characteristics or properties of silk fiber
As a fabric silk is very light weight, soft, smooth and fine. But, along with all these properties there are many other characteristics which make silk one of the most popular fabric in comparison to other. Mentioned below are some of the main properties of silk fabric:
  • It has tendency to absorb making apparel items warm in winter and cool in summer.
  • It is neither sun or wrinkle resistant which means it will not fade or weaken the fabric.
  • It can be washed by hands that will help in increasing the beauty and life of fiber.
  • Good dye affinity along with shine and shimmering properties.
  • It is one of the most comfortable fabrics in world which will not cause any uneasiness.
  • It is the strongest fabric available till now.
  • Low density fabric that make apparel items light.
  • High resistant to deformation
  • Good and effective drape property
  • It can create static charges

What is regenerated silk fiber?
Silk fiber is available in different variants and regenerated silk fiber is one of them. It is produced by dissolving cocoons of silkworm in chemical without affecting their molecular structure. The silk threads which are dissolved are known as micro fibrils. After this, solution is extruded through small opening which cause micro fibrils to assemble in single fiber. In fact, the result produced is known as to be as stiff as silk.

Uses of silk
The silk is used for preparing silk clothes, but with continuous increase in its price use of pure silk is decreasing gradually. There are many other uses of silk, some of its main uses are as follow:
  1. It can be used as art piece that you can have in house. Due to it’s bright color and texture it can work as framed woven art and beautiful tapestries.
  2. Due to high level of comfort it can be used for bedding such as for making pillow covers, bed sheets and duvet covers.
  3. Silk also has many commercial and industrial uses such as in comforter fillings, bicycle tires, gunpowder bags and parachutes.
  4. Silk also has numerous uses in medical line such as it is suitable for making surgical suture, disposable cups, holograms and drug delivery system.
